Turf disease is an ever-present problem for managers of fine turf surfaces, golf and bowling greens etc.
Fusarium Patch is the most widely occurring disease on turf and can be controlled by applying either a contact fungicide or one with system properties. Symptoms can occur all year round but is most common in the spring and autumn.
Contact fungicide: Control is obtained through the fungicide coming into contact with the disease spores on the leaf surface.
Contact fungicides are best suited to being applied during the late autumn/winter months when the plant has stopped growing.
Systemic fungicide; Works by penetrating the plant leaves and spreading throughout then plant. Ideal for application during the spring and summer while the plant is actively growing.
Once inside the plant it cannot be washed off.
Pests damage on turf can be severe if left untreated.
Some pests like worms cause unsightly worm casts that interfere with play on golf and bowling greens and bring dormant weed seeds to the surface which then germinate.
Other pests such as leatherjackets. Chafer grubs and frit fly actually harm the grass by damaging the plant roots.
Early identification is essential, as is application timing and the correct selection of control measures.
